SCG will continue to monitor Grangemouth situation
Following the end of the current strike at Grangemouth Refinery, Central Scotland Strategic Co-Ordinating Group has said it will continue to work towards its key aims of public safety and business continuity.

The group has met several times over the past 10 days to progress a structured and joined-up response to the dispute and the potential impact upon communities.

Petro-chemical industry representatives have worked alongside the SCG to advise on the shutdown process and will continue to keep the group updated on the plans for the start-up of the refinery. The environment around Grangemouth will continue to be closely monitored by SEPA, who are also represented on the SCG.

The start-up of the refinery may result in significantly increased noise and flaring, over and above those usually experienced by the community during times of shutdown, start-up and normal operation of the plant.

The community of Grangemouth has many decades of experience of living next to this site. SCG members are also well-rehearsed in terms of dealing with a wide range of potential incidents. We would ask that the public remain patient during the period that the refinery will be brought up to full operational capacity.

Fuel supplies are adequate to deal with current demand and again the public are asked to stick to their normal fuel-buying patterns.

Information has been made available on our response to this situation through the media, websites and in a direct mailing to more than 9000 households in Grangemouth. We will continue to provide updates as appropriate on the following websites:

SCG would like to thank the public for their measured response to the situation, which has meant no significant fuel shortages in the Forth Valley.

SCH Chairman, Chief Constable Andrew Cameron, on behalf of the group, also thanked staff from all member organisations who were willing to work hard and be flexible over their working shifts to enable us to get through what has been a challenging period.

Notes:
The purpose of the Central Scotland SCG is to establish and maintain a formal partnership, as required under the Civil Contingencies Act, as an aid to planning for the effective management of response to emergencies.

SCG Members include:
Central Scotland Police; Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service; Falkirk Council; Stirling Council; Clackmannanshire Council; NHS Forth Valley; Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Scottish Ambulance Service.
