| Fire Board Approves Budget |
|
News Release 30/01/09 More Firefighters for Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service At its meeting today (30th January 2009) Central Scotland Joint Fire and Rescue Board agreed its budget for 2009/10. The budget has been increased by just over 3% from the current year and it includes a number of changes to the Fire and Rescue Service proposed by the Chief Fire Officer. The most significant change sees a reduction in the number of middle manager posts and an increase in front-line staff. The Service's crews at Crianlarich and Tyndrum will also see a change in their status. Overall, around £300,000 of efficiency savings have been identified with around half of that being invested in the provision of more front-line staff. Fire Board Convener Craig Martin says: The Board is very pleased that at a time when public spending is under a lot of pressure, we have been able to bring in a tightly controlled budget and also identify efficiency savings. As well as being helpful for our Councils, we have been able to re-invest some of those savings where it matters - into front line services. The increase of four front line staff at the expense of back office posts and the change in status of our stations at Crianlarich and Tyndrum will deliver a major improvement and, ultimately, lead to safer communities. The staff at Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to do a first class job and the Board is delighted to support them in that.Chief Fire Officer Steven Torrie says: We have been trying to manage an ever increasing range of duties and work with a decreasing number of front line staff, so there is no doubt that the Board's decision will allow to us continue to provide the best possible service to the people of central Scotland. We are making every effort to become more efficient year-on-year and we will continue to do so. The Board has approved a budget which will take the Service forward and allow us to improve the services we provide. |
