Flat Rescue Prompts Warning

Posted on 19th December 2011

A fire believed to have been caused by a mattress being set alight in the stairwell of a block of flats in Stirling resulted in one of the occupiers having to be rescued by firefighters.

Crews from Stirling and Bridge of Allan were called to the scene at Cowane Street just after 10pm on Thursday and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus removed the person from the flat using the aerial ladder platform.

The incident has prompted Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service Community Safety manager Gordon Pryde to issue a warning to people who live in flats to ensure that stairwells are not being used as storage areas:

"In a block of flats, a stairwell is the primary means of escape and it is important that this is left clear at all times as any items stored there can be a potential fire hazard.

"We would also advise people to make sure that they fit smoke alarms and that they check them regularly."
