School fire suspicious say police
Bo'ness Academy
An investigation has begun into the cause of the fire
A fire which resulted in a school being evacuated is being treated as suspicious, police have confirmed.

Bo'ness Academy, Falkirk, was closed on Tuesday after a fire broke out in the gymnasium at about 1300 GMT.

About 820 pupils and 130 staff members had to be led to safety following the blaze which destroyed about 30% of the gym hall.

No-one was injured in the incident. An investigation into the cause of the blaze is under way.

A spokeswoman for Central Scotland Police said: "A team of detectives are following a number of inquiries.

"The fire is being treated as suspicious and the damage to the school gym is extensive.

"The scene is currently being examined by forensic scientists and specialist fire investigators."

'Immediate vicinity'

More than 20 firefighters from Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident.

The school, which opened in 2000, was among the first of Falkirk's PFI projects in partnership with contractor Class98 Limited.

A spokeswoman for Falkirk Council said the fire would have an impact on the school's exam timetable.

She said: "The damage to the gym and immediate vicinity is currently being assessed by Class 98 representatives.

"Prelims due to take place this week are being rescheduled and parents and pupils will be provided with further information as it becomes available."
